Holland was much below sea level. The town had strong dikes with strong walls.
Peter’s father was the gate keeper of the dike. One day Peter went to meet his
blind friend with some cakes.
“ I want
you to go across the dike & take the cakes to your friend “- Mom
She advised him to return before sunset. Peter walked
home that evening along the canal. The canal was filled with rain water.
“ I am glad that dikes are so strong” - Peter
Peter walked home, suddenly he saw a hole and water
streaming out of from the walls. Being intelligent he knew the upcoming danger.
He looked around for help, but no one was there. The water was faster now. The
hole could become bigger& water could destroy the town.
“
Holland shall not be drowned when I am here”
- Peter
He thrust his finger into the small hole & stopped
the water. It became dark ,he stayed there the whole night in the same position.
His mother thought that Peter had stayed with his friend. Next morning a
stranger found Peter. The news spread & people came and appreciated Peter
for his bravery. Thus he was called ‘The Young Hero of Holland’.
